In Spring semester 1999 I had the good fortune to hold the Distinguished Chair position in North American Studies at the University of Calgary, hosted by the Department of Archaeology. When I arrived by car from Pullman it was -35 degrees F! But, I received a warm welcome in the department. I gained several valuable things from my Fulbright experience: some knowledge of the archaeology in a different area in North America; insights into how another university solves problems and makes changes; and most important, I made collaborative links with faculty and students that have been valuable ever since. I would do it again in a minute: it was a real growth opportunity.
