Global Leadership Certificate
International Programs in partnership with the University College offers a Global Leadership Certificate that consists of the following requirements. At the completion of specific coursework and active learning experiences students will be empowered to analyze, adapt, communicate, problem-solve, and empathize within a variety of professional and personal networks.
Selection of courses and activities will be made in consultation with the Director of Global Learning. All undergraduate certificates are certified through the Registrar's Office and require a $50 fee before the certificate can be awarded.
Requirements for the Global Leadership Certificate
1) 12 credits (4 courses) of Approved Coursework
Specific courses for the Certificate address contemporary issues that cross national borders or international regions and include intercultural subject matter from across the disciplines. Courses taken in residence at WSU and while studying abroad may be applied to this requirement.
2) Leadership Development (UCOLL 497)
All students will take a specific section of UCOLL 497 on global leadership. This one credit, graded course will provide students skills to live, work and interact within networks of individuals and groups with culturally and internationally diverse perspectives and practices.
3) Global Engagement (UCOLL 499)
This requirement may be satisfied in one of two ways:
An Intensive International/Intercultural/Civic Engagement Experience in which the student is "immersed" in one intensive international or domestic experience that enables the student to engage in activities with a global implications. Such activities include study abroad, internships, exchange programs, civic engagement or research. The intensive experience must be of at least one week's duration and satisfy academic requirements for one credit (45 contact hours and written reflections.)
OR
A Set of Sustained "Globalization at Home" Experiences that allow the flexibility of engaging in local activities with cultural/international groups or those that address the intersections of local/global issues such as poverty, hunger, health, community development, or sustainability. After completion of a total of 45 hours and written reflections, the student will be enrolled in one non-graded credit of UCOLL 499.
4) Integrative Capstone (UCOLL 491)
The integrative capstone is a one credit graded course taken after completion of the three requirements discussed above. The course is designed to empower students to be a "global citizen" within the context of the personal, civic and professional activities and interactions. Students will integrate their coursework and experiences through the completion of a course project.
