Scholarship Scam Targets Prospective International Students

Recently the Washington State University (WSU) Office of International Programs has become aware of a email scam in which the addressee was notified that he/she has been awarded a scholarship to attend WSU. This email requested the recipient to donate money to the University in order to help fund future scholars and was sent from the international email address used by the Office of International Programs, Undergraduate Admissions Dept.

Neither the email or any letter with a similar message or request is from WSU. If you or anyone you know is a recipient of such an email or letter, we request that you contact WSU Office of International Programs right away or the WSU Police Department.

This is an excerpt from the fraudulent email:

Dear Prospective Student,

Following your visit to various academic sites ,I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to attend the Washington State University Conference(WSUC) to be held in our institution (WSU) for seven months.

Air-ticket,Accommodation,Medical Insurance and free registration to the conference will be catered for.Apart from visa processing fee to be paid at the consulate of your country.

Full time study scholarship will be guaranteed after your six months stay here.

If you are interested send us your full personal details and scanned copies of your official high school/college transcripts and passport photo size.

I do very much hope that you will accept this Invitation.

The sender also provided the recipient with a fake WSU Student ID Number and Department information.

This email is a scam and we are in the process of investigating the issue. WSU does not want prospective students to be concerned about their admission status and we are proactively working to identify the source of these emails. If you have any concerns you may contact us for assistance.
