About Education Abroad
The Education Abroad Office (EA) seeks to assist in educating a diverse student body to become responsible global citizens and future leaders by enabling students to integrate an academically-challenging and personally-enriching education abroad experience into their four-year academic degree plan at WSU. EA also assists WSU faculty and departments with all aspects of designing and implementing faculty-led programs abroad.

As director my role is to guide the Education Abroad Office in achieving its goal of assisting all WSU students with incorporating a high-quality education abroad experience into their four-year academic degree program. Sending students abroad is a partnership with other offices on campus, such as the Financial Aid Office, with our faculty who wish to develop faculty-led programs, our partner universities, and our study abroad program providers. It is my job to see that we maintain effective partnerships with all of these entities. Another important project is working with the WSU Foundation to create a scholarship endowment to enable more students to participate in study abroad Also, because the field of education abroad has lacked extensive data demonstrating its outcomes – educational, professional, and personal – I am working on developing an outcomes assessment program for WSU’s own programs and on gathering data on the impact of education abroad on WSU students.
My interest in international education began when I studied in Germany as an undergraduate student. Later I worked in Japan for several years teaching English before earning a Masters degree in Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii. When not at the office I enjoy spending time with my two teenage sons, swimming, gardening, biking, watching movies, eating chocolate chip cookies and, of course, traveling.

As an Education Abroad Advisor, I work with Business and Liberal Arts students, and Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing professional students to arrange an appropriate study abroad, exchange or academic internship abroad. I also serve as the Outreach Coordinator, and present on study abroad at various events, classes, organizations and clubs. After having studied abroad in Italy, I was determined to go abroad again. I have worked in International Education for 7 years; I taught English in Japan and Thailand, and was the program director for a study abroad program in Nepal. I completed my masters degree in 2003 in Teaching International Languages (TEFOL) from California State University, Chico. My experiences living abroad have shaped who I am and what my passions are. I greatly enjoy talking to and encouraging all students to broaden their perspectives, gain critical intercultural skills and enrich their lives by studying, interning and working abroad. As the Faculty-Led program Specialist in the Education Abroad office I assist faculty in the development, recruitment, and implementation of Faculty-Led programs and advise students participating in such programs. Faculty-led programs range from one week programs to semester-long programs and build upon the special interests of a WSU Faculty member. These programs give students an opportunity to study abroad, gain cultural understanding, and develop global competencies with the familiarity of a trusted faculty member and WSU classmates.
I grew up in Moscow, Idaho and have attended both the University of Idaho and Washington State University. In the 10 years that I have worked at WSU I have developed a network of contacts and wide knowledge of WSU policies and procedures. I enjoy working in International Programs and at WSU.

As the Program Support Supervisor in Education Abroad I am the primary point of contact for the office. My role is to coordinate daily operations with the associated education abroad programs and administrative services. Serving as liaison between WSU offices and external partners I assist students to participate in specialized exchange and study abroad programs. My cross departmental experience at WSU has given me knowledge of the departments and colleges across campus. I enjoy working at WSU and being part of the Education Abroad team, I look forward to working with students, faculty and staff.

As an Education Abroad Advisor, my role is to inform students about the full range of exciting education abroad opportunities offered at WSU and to assist them in choosing the program that best fits their academic and personal interests. I specifically work with students within the colleges of Liberal Arts, Communication, Sciences, and Business. In addition to advising students, I also serve as the Exchange Coordinator and assist students interested in participating in academic exchanges through our partner universities abroad.
My interest in International Education was sparked after studying abroad in Italy as an undergraduate. Living in Rome and immersing into a new culture completely changed my life. My experience abroad provided me with a wider appreciation of different cultures, of valuing other people and their differing perspectives, and ultimately, inspired a new career path for me.
After finishing my Masters degree in Higher Education Administration, with a research emphasis in International Education from Washington State University, I traveled extensively, visiting over 22 countries including areas of Europe, Africa, and Central America. I then spent six months working as an on-site coordinator for a Spanish Immersion Program and Language School in San Carlos, Costa Rica. It was my hope that by experiencing different means of travel I could better assist students through the holistic and educational transitions they may face before, during, and after their ventures abroad. My international education experiences have positively impacted my life in so many ways, and I am very excited to pay it forward by helping future students study abroad!

Hello. I am Dr. Carol Wilkerson, Interim Director of Student Affairs at the Tri Cities campus of WSU and Education Abroad Liaison. My undergraduate degree is in Spanish, and my graduate degrees are in Hispanic Studies and Foreign Language Education. My travels have taken me to Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe as a student and a faculty member, and for vacations and family visits. I welcome the opportunity to speak with faculty, staff, or students about International Programs and Education Abroad.

My name is Bill Stahley and I am the education abroad liaison on the Vancouver campus. I work with students during the initial stages, as they learn about the details and the process of studying abroad. My first experience abroad occurred during my college years. I spent the summer in Cameroon, interacting with the people and learning about the culture. That experience changed me to the core and it significantly impacted the course of my life. My passion for travel and for other cultures has only increased over time. I am passionate about working with college students, especially as it relates to education abroad. My hope is that all students will have the opportunity to go abroad and experience the life change that comes with it. Go ABROAD Cougs!
