Academic Planning for Education Abroad
Why do I need to complete the Course Pre-Approval Form?
Having a documented conversation with your Academic Advisor(s) prior to studying abroad will help you make a more informed decision about which courses to take while overseas and provide you with a written record of those decisions. Your Academic Advisor(s) may be able to point out additional considerations that are specific to your General Education, Major, Minor, or Honors requirements. An awareness of how your study abroad coursework will fulfill graduation requirements can help you study abroad and still graduate on time!
Instructions for Students Participating on Faculty-Led Programs
- In most cases, if you are participating in a WSU Faculty-led Program you will take only WSU courses, and therefore will not need to complete a Course Approval Form. For such programs the Course Pre-Approval Form will not appear in your MyStudyAbroad application checklist.
- However, on some WSU Faculty-Led Programs you do take one or more non-WSU courses, and for these programs you will need to complete a course approval form. For these programs the Course Approval Form will appear in your MyStudyAbroad application checklist. To obtain approvals follow the instructions listed below.
Instructions for Students Participating on a Study Abroad, Internship, Exchange or Partnership Program
- If you are participating in any education abroad program on which you will take non-WSU courses, print a copy of the Course Pre-Approval Form or pick up a copy from the Education Abroad Office.
- Research courses offered by your education abroad program or host institution while keeping in mind WSU requirements you need to fulfill.
- List desired study abroad courses and alternate choices on this form. If specific course titles are not available, list the subjects you want to study.
- Schedule an appointment with your Academic Advisor(s) to discuss course selection and your degree plan. In addition, consult the advisor listed below if you have specific needs:

- Once your coursework is posted to your WSU transcript, review your Course Approval Form and confirm with each department that the courses listed have met graduation requirements in the Degree Audit Report.
Courses Applied Toward Graduation
The courses listed on the WSU Course Approval Form will be applied towards your graduation requirements only with the appropriate signatures. Courses taken abroad without being pre-approved on the form are not guaranteed to fulfill graduation requirements. If you or your advisors have any questions about this process, please call the Education Abroad Office at 509-335-6204.
