Culture Corner: Meet Your Global Community

On Monday, April 18th from 5-7 PM in CUB L45, the Center for Civic Engagement and the International Student Center will be holding a reflection event for students, faculty, and staff to discuss and learn more about our global community. Students from the International Center will be presenting on their cultures and countries. Kelsey Hawthorne from the International Center and Hannah Nevitt from the Education Abroad office will discuss:

(1) how to build your awareness of global issues,
(2) why it is important to connect with WSU's global community, and
(3) the challenges to building cultural awareness.

Activities and a reflection session will follow presentations. Be a part of this awesome opportunity and earn 2 hours of reflection time. International Education Week 2011

This year’s ASWSU International Students’ Council’s annual International Education Week is finally upon us! The events begin April 7 and continue all the way through April 16. All of the events are open to the public; however some may require the purchasing of tickets. This is a great opportunity for students and non-students alike to get to see different cultures from around the world.

Fulbright visitor eager to share back home

Sudhir Uprit was drawn to Washington State University because of Juming Tangs groundbreaking research and because Pullman seemed like a good fit for his family. Uprit is a professor and department chair of dairy technology at Indira Gandhi Agricultural University in Raipur.

Seeking Involvement from WSU Community for International Education Week

ASWSU's International Students' Council is currently planning for International Education Week (IEW), an event that aims to promote global learning and cross-cultural sharing.

This week-long event will be comprised of a variety of activities including: speakers, panels, cultural presentations, food and language sharing, sporting events, international debates, and more.

In order to create a diverse and successful IEW, we need members of the community to contribute their skills, passions, and areas of expertise. All faculty, staff, graduate students, and community members are encouraged to submit a proposal.

There are no boundaries*.If you are a faculty member who has a passion for something inside or outside your area of study, we want to hear from you! If you are a staff member who has traveled the world, let us know! If you are a graduate student who loves soccer, send us an email! IEW promotes ALL cultures and ALL avenues of learning. The sky is the limit, so please consider what you can contribute.

*Submissions will be screened to ensure they fit with the overall mission of IEW.

U.S.-Ethiopian University Partnership Seed Money Competition: Application and Guidelines Now Available

Application Deadline: January 31, 2010

As a concrete initiative to follow up on the "Building Sustainable U.S.-Ethiopian Partnerships" conference held in Addis Ababa from December 10-11, 2010, the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section is sponsoring a small grant competition. The U.S.-Ethiopian University Partnership Seed Money Competition is intended to encourage the start-up of innovative and mutually beneficial partnerships between U.S. and Ethiopian universities and colleges. The conference was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia and the Institute of International Education.

Partnership proposals may be wide-ranging in scope and format - from faculty and student exchange programs, to research collaborations, joint degree programs and comprehensive institutional partnerships - but they must be conceived and prepared jointly by representatives of a U.S. and an Ethiopian institution, and they must have approval of the President or senior official of both institutions.


Seed Money Competition Objectives:

  • Grow mutually beneficial partnerships between U.S. and Ethiopian universities and colleges.
  • Introduce new higher education institutions to U.S. and Ethiopian partnerships including from a greater diversity of locations in both countries.
  • Build the basis for future sustainable partnerships between the collaborating institutions.
  • Strengthen the skills and experience of higher education faculty and administrators in both countries in developing and implementing partnerships.

Working to expand global expertise starts at home

On Tuesday, January 18 a Common Reading Program event sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures featured four panelists sharing insights gleaned while working internationally and locally with international students.

"While panelists described very different international experiences, from a military deployment to business meetings to veterinary research, all agreed on two key attributes in a global exchange toolkit: humility and openness."

"For five Wednesday evenings, starting on October 13th, Moscow's downtown theater will be presenting the 2010 Tournes Festival sponsored by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Ministry of Culture (CNC). The Festival will begin at 7:00 p.m. on the 13th with a special reception offering French food from the West of Paris restaurant and the Moscow Food Coop and French wine from the Wine Company of Moscow."

CUGH 2010 Annual Meeting

The Transforming Global Health: The interdisciplinary Power of Universities will be held in Seattle, Washington on September 19th 21st. The meeting will focus on building the science base for global health, educational innovations, and enabling of systems. Join faculty, researchers, administrators, students, trainees and leaders from academia, government and international development groups to discuss the University's transforming role and how resources can be mobilized to advance global health.

The CUGH annual meeting is the premiere conference focused on university-based global health research, education and international projects, providing practical information about building and managing a university program as well as opportunities to learn directly from global health experts and innovators.

Scholars from Afghanistan on Campus

Scholars from AfghanistanThe WSU International Programs/ Research and Development Office staff are pleased to welcome mid-level government employees from Afghanistan to participate in the Masters in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) Study Abroad Program, June 7th through July 30th 2010. This program is part of the WSU Afghan eQuality Alliances (AeQA) Project funded by USAID.

The AeQA stakeholders and partners include government agencies and universities in the United States, Asia and Africa who work together towards a common goal: building sustainable capacity in Afghanistan's higher education institutions by providing equal access to quality education and e-education resources

WSU professor named to Fulbright ambassadorship

Mushtaq MemonA Washington State University faculty member known for his dedication to international veterinary medicine has been selected as a Fulbright ambassador.

Dr. Mushtaq A. Memon, associate professor in WSU's Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department and the School for Global Animal Health, is the first veterinarian selected for such a position.

Dr. Memon was a Fulbright scholar in the Sultanate of Oman from2006-2007. He is among a select group of 29 Fulbright alumni to become ambassadors for the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which administers the Fulbright Scholar Program in collaboration with the U.S. State Department.

The program, now in its second year, invites Fulbright scholar alumni to serve as representatives at campus workshops and academic conferences across the U.S for two years. These ambassadors are helping to expand Fulbright's outreach efforts to the higher education community.

Arasu selected as associate vice president

Prema Arasuhas been named associate vice president for international programs and chief international officer at WSU.

Prema ArasuSheis associate vice provost, Office of International Affairs, at North Carolina State University, as well asdirector of Global Health Initiative and professor at the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine.

Her extensive background in international affairs and focus on interdisciplinary scholarship makes her uniquely suited to not only build on existing strengths in IP, but also to foster even greater collaboration around issues of clean technology, sustainable development and global health," saidJohn Gardner,vice president for economic development and global engagement.

WSU sees continued record enrollment of international students

Washington State University has experienced a 39% increase in overall international student enrollment from spring 2007 to spring 2010. Currently, 5.8% of students enrolled at WSU are international students. There are 1,440 international students this spring semester, a record surpassing last year's enrollment of 1227 students.


Ripple Effect Changes Lives in Africa

WSU launched a philanthropic website that may be the first of its kind developed by a college or university. Designed to provide direct aid to impoverished citizens in Malawi, Africa, Ripple Effect (http://rippleeffect.wsu.edu) lets students, alumni and interested contributors of all ages and abilities leverage WSUs agricultural, engineering, veterinary science and economic development research and worldwide outreach with gifts ranging from $16 to tens of thousands.
