Financial Assistance from International Programs

Information for six different programs are available. The first three awards listed below do not require a student to apply. Students are automatically awarded these scholarships if they meet the GPA requirements. Scholarship forms for the remaining awards are available in the sidebar.

International Freshman Academic Award**

The WSU International Freshman Academic Award is a tuition reduction that is available to entering non-immigrant, non-resident, degree seeking undergraduate freshman students who have not attained a year of transfer credit from elsewhere and who are offered admission to Washington State University. The WSU Academic Scholarship Application is not required since the award will be offered automatically, based on the cumulative GPA from your previous institution(s), as determined using WSU's GPA policies. Awards are distributed during both Fall and Spring semesters. They will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Funds are limited, therefore students who are admitted later in the season are not guaranteed this award.

  • Level One $1,000/semester tuition waiver - offered to freshman students with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 3.59 (on 4.0 scale). The award is renewable for seven additional semesters of undergraduate, first-degree study if a 3.2 cumulative GPA is maintained while attending classes on a WSU campus, full-time student status is maintained, and 24 credits per year are successfully completed. (Total possible award is $1,000 x 8 semesters = $8,000).

  • Level Two $2,000/semester tuition waiver - offered to freshman students with a cumulative GPA of 3.6 and higher (on 4.0 scale). The award is renewable for seven additional semesters of undergraduate, first-degree study if a 3.2 cumulative GPA is maintained while attending classes on a WSU campus, full-time student status is maintained, and 24 credits per year are successfully completed. (Total possible award is $2,000 x 8 semesters = $16,000).

International Merit Award**

The International Merit Award is a tuition reduction that offers merit based tuition reduction awards, $2,000 in value (but variable from year to year based on funds available) to international, degree-seeking, F-1 undergraduate students attending the Pullman campus who meet at least one of the following criteria:(1) Cumulative GPA of 3.6 or above, (2) Unusual service to the university or community and/or (3) Other extraordinary work or achievement. To apply, submit the following:

  • Completed
    International Programs Scholarship Form
  • Personal letter describing your meritorious qualities per items 1, 2, and/or 3 above
  • Letter of recommendation from your advisor, a professor, or an official program administrator

The deadlines are June 1 and December 1 for fall and spring semesters respectively. This award may only be offered to the same student a maximum of four (4) times.

International Postbacc Academic Award**

The WSU International Postbacc Academic Award is a tuition reduction that is available to non-immigrant, non-resident, degree seeking undergraduate students who are admitted to WSU after having already received a bachelor degree (post-baccalaureate status). The WSU Academic Scholarship Application is not required since the award will be offered automatically, based on the cumulative GPA from your previous institution(s), as determined using WSU's GPA policies. Awards are distributed during both Fall and Spring semesters. A limited number of awards will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Funds are limited, therefore students who are admitted later in the season are not guaranteed this award.

  • Level One: $1,000/semester tuition waiver - offered to transfer students with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.3 3.59 (on 4.0 scale). The award is renewable for five additional semesters of undergraduate study if 3.2 cumulative GPA is maintained while attending classes on a WSU campus, full-time student status is maintained, and 24 credits per year (12 credits per semester) are successfully completed. International Transfer Academic Award**

The WSU International Transfer Academic Award is a tuition reduction that is available to non-immigrant, non-resident, degree seeking undergraduate transfer students who do not currently have a bachelor degree and are offered admission to WSU. The WSU Academic Scholarship Application is not required since the award will be offered automatically, based on the cumulative GPA from the transferring institution(s), as determined using WSU's GPA policies. Awards are distributed during both Fall and Spring semesters. Funds are limited, therefore students who are admitted later in the season are not guaranteed this award.

International Science Student Scholarships

The International Science Student Scholarships are offered by the College of Sciences to new international degree seeking undergraduate students who are going into one of the Science programs at WSU. Programs that qualify are Biology, Zoology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell Biology, Microbiology, pre-Medical, pre-Dental, pre-Veterinary, Biotechnology, pre-Pharmacy, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Physics, and Math.

  • Successful applicants will be serious incoming international undergraduate students with good grades and an interest in contributing to the human condition through their field.
  • The first section of the
    International Programs Scholarship Form must be completed for this scholarship plus a statement describing the applicants' plans for the future in his/her chosen field.
  • There are two scholarships of $1000 each available to be distributed for fall semester 2007. The deadline is August 1.

Emergency Tuition Support Award

A foreign student must satisfy the following criteria to be eligible for emergency tuition assistance through International Programs. The deadlines are June 1 and December 1 for fall and spring semesters respectively. If you have any questions about this award please contact an international student advisor in Bryan Hall 108 or call 509-335-3188.

  • The degree seeking F-1 or J-1 student must be attending the Pullman campus, and must be encountering an unforeseen financial need which has arisen from an event beyond her/his control, such as the loss of (a) an assistantship; (b) a scholarship; or (c) family, personal or other funding resulting from a death, serious illness, political upheaval in the students' home country, etc.
  • The student should be in the final stages of her/his degree program.
  • The student should provide evidence that other sources of funding for tuition are not available.
  • The student must NOT have received emergency funding from International Programs, previously.
  • Other extenuating circumstances will be considered if funds are available.
  • Student should submit the following materials to International Admissions
    • Completed
      International Programs Scholarship Form
    • Completed International Programs
      Certification of Financial Status and any supporting documents available to substantiate a lack of funds for tuition
    • Written request explaining in detail the unforeseen event causing the shortfall of funds to support your education
    • Brief supporting statement from student academic advisor indicating academic progress of student and anticipated time to completion of degree

NOTE on Restrictions

** This award cannot be held concurrently with other institutional awards from Washington State University nor can it be given to fully sponsored students. However, additional departmental or donor-based scholarships can be held concurrently with this award.
