2017 International Research Travel Award Winners

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Office of International Programs and the Office of Research at Washington State University announced five recipients of the Fifth Annual International Research Travel Awards (IRTA), Tuesday.

This year’s winners are Dr. Erica Crespi (College of Arts and Sciences), Dr. Anne Marie Guerrettaz (College of Education), Dr. Kristin Lesseig (College of Education), Dr. Min-Kyu Song (Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture), and Dr. Jonathan Wisor (Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine).

Each award winner receives $2,000 to $5,000 in order to assist in the promotion and strengthening of international research collaborations. Current, full-time WSU faculty members who submitted an application that met the IRTA guidelines were eligible for the award.

“Each recipient has shown leadership in their respective areas and is either conducting or has shown great interest in exploring possibilities for collaborative research that addresses at least one of the strategically targeted areas of research known as the ‘grand challenges’ at WSU,” WSU Vice President for International Programs Asif Chaudhry said. “This type of work is vital to our success as a global institution.”

WSU Vice President for Research Chris Keane added, “It is great to see WSU’s research strengths so well represented by this year’s diverse set of winners. They demonstrate the solutions WSU research can offer to a wide variety of global challenges.”

This year’s research award topics include: assessing health consequences of oil sands mine pollution and fire on amphibians; revitalizing disappearing native languages; innovations in the preparation of secondary mathematics teachers; advanced energy storage systems for transport and grid applications based on earth-abundant materials; polysomnographic detection of predictive biomarkers in sleep disorders.
