About the program
Our International Master’s program (IM) helps you earn your master’s degree with added support for essential English language and academic skills needed for graduate study. Admission through the IM program does not require a GRE test score. During your IM program, earn grades of B or higher and join your master’s program. You’ll take all the credits you earned in IM with you toward your master’s degree at WSU.
Through IM, you can expect:
- Pre-enrollment in classes before arrival
- Face-to-face instruction on the WSU Pullman campus in small graduate classes that count toward your degree
- English language support designed just for graduate study to help you write effectively, cite sources, and speak with confidence
- Personalized academic, social, and cultural advising and support
- An assigned peer mentor to help you make friends, build community, and adjust to being a graduate student at WSU

Admission requirements
Students wanting to enroll through the IM program need:
- A completed WSU application
- Undergraduate degree in relevant subject
- U.S. equivalent of B grade or higher
- Some graduate degree programs require prerequisite coursework and additional materials
- University/college transcripts
- Passport
Program placement
Whether you complete 1 or 2 semesters of the IM program depends on your grade point average (GPA) and English proficiency scores.

Please have Duolingo, TOEFL, and IELTS scores sent directly from the testing agency.
Duolingo
For Duolingo tests, you will have to select Washington State University as your school of choice. Please read the rules and follow them CAREFULLY.
- Log in to englishtest.duolingo.com with the email address you used to take the test.
- Scroll down to your certified test results and click the “SEND RESULTS” button at the top next to “print results.”
- Select university for what you are applying to.
- Start typing Washington State University and select your choice using the checkbox. Be sure to select Undergraduate for your level, even though you are applying for our International Master’s program.
- If you have an applicant ID, do not forget to add it!
- Press “Send.”
TOEFL
Your test fee includes up to 4 free official TOEFL score reports to be sent to the institutions, agencies, or other recipients that you select before you take the test. You can add or delete recipients through your ETS account until 10 p.m. (local test center time) on the day before your test.
- Log in to your TOEFL iBT account
- On the home page, select “Order Score Reports.” (You will need to register for a test date before you can do this step.)
- For Product Type, click “TOEFL Services” then click “Continue.”
- Select the test date you want to send the scores of and click “Continue.”
- Search for Washington State University and select it. Use the school code 4705.
IELTS
If you took your IELTS exam in a test center, you could request to send IELTS results to up to 5 organizations. We would prefer that you send the results to us electronically. Make this request with your test center.
Online test takers can send their results to as many institutions as they need.

For every semester of IM, you will take supportive English courses through the Intensive American Language Center (IALC) and 6 credits at the 500 level toward your graduate degree. IALC courses do not count toward your degree. Here is a sample study IM plan:

The M.S. in Applied Economics program provides strong foundations in economic theory, quantitative methods, applications, communication skills, and research analysis. Students can focus their studies in general economics, agribusiness, or agricultural and resource economics by carefully selecting supporting and elective courses. Students can earn an M.S. in Applied Economics to specifically prepare for positions in private corporations and government service as management specialists, policy analysts, forecasters or economic consultants. Two options are offered in the degree: thesis and non-thesis. This degree can be completed by well-prepared students in 2 years or less.

Faculty research is broadly focused in 3 areas: sustainable energy systems; biomolecular engineering; and biomechanics. Within these areas projects are focused on chemical and biological catalysis and kinetics; chemical and biological fuel cells; biofilm engineering; novel sensor technologies; cardiac and reproductive molecular engineering; and molecular, cellular, and musculoskeletal mechanics. The graduate programs are flexible, allowing students to develop a program that fits individual needs. A Master of Science is typically completed in 1-2 years.

The Curriculum and Instruction specialization offers students rigorous and individually tailored programs of study with 2 degrees. The thesis Master of Arts (M.A.) focuses on educational research in curriculum and instruction; and the non-thesis Master of Education (Ed.M.) degree programs are designed for students with bachelor degrees who have an interest in deepening their knowledge in a specific content area (in or outside the College of Education). The M.A. is a thesis degree emphasizing applying research, theory, and evidence-based practices to improve education.

The M.A. degree with specialization in educational psychology is a concentration in research, evaluation, psychometrics, and cognition. While students at the master’s level in educational psychology complete a common core of courses, a portion of each master’s degree program is composed of courses selected by the student and his/her advisory committee to tailor the program of study around the student’s personal interests and professional aspirations. M.A. recipients in educational psychology are well prepared to continue doctoral level training if so desired. However, an M.A would give access to entry level positions in this intriguing field that presents an ever-changing, challenging, and rewarding work environment.

The Language, Literacy, and Technology (LLT) graduate program prepares graduates for academic and leadership positions in teaching, research, and service with a focus on equity and social justice. The graduate program in Language, Literacy, and Technology includes a broad curriculum of study, including foundational courses in literacy within the disciplines, the study of computer-assisted language and literacy development, and communicating in a multilingual and multi-literate society.

The MFA program is a 3-year interdisciplinary program where students may focus in, but are not limited to, ceramics, drawing, digital media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Emphasis is placed on personal and conceptual artistic development in light of contemporary art practices.

The philosophy of the Interior Design program is based on a concern for human beings and the creation of interior settings that support human activities and values. We are focused on how design excellence and innovation can tackle issues surrounding the human condition in the built environmental, especially around health and well-being and environmental stewardship.

Materials Science and Engineering is an exciting field at the interface of science and engineering that directly influences all modern technologies, from energy and the environment to space exploration to biomedical devices. Due to its breadth of impact and complexity, materials science and engineering is inherently multidisciplinary.

The Master of Science in Mathematics is offered along with an Applied Mathematics Option, a Computational Finance Option, and a Mathematics Teaching Option. In all of our degree programs we combine a sound general core of fundamental mathematics with electives that reflect individual interests, needs, and opportunities. Each track allows for specialization within the field of mathematics, but all establish a general foundation that should be valuable to students in any mathematical work they do.

Master of Arts in Political Science Non Thesis in conjunction with certificate program is a terminal degree program designed to provide students with a specialized qualification better suited for the pursuit of professional careers in federal, state, or local government. The GJSS program targets students intending to pursue largely non-academic, governmental careers as practitioners, whether it be in the field of homeland security, law enforcement, or as analysts within the U.S. intelligence or defense communities.
