Global Learning for Japanese Students

Begin planning as early as possible

  • Determine how education abroad fits into your overall degree plan with your academic advisor.
  • Begin the process your freshman year.

Going abroad your sophomore year is ideal

  • Finding applicable coursework is easier earlier in your major, before you reach upper-division requirements.
  • Studying abroad in the last semester of your senior year may delay graduation.

Bilateral Exchange: International Christian University

Founded in 1949, International Christian University (ICU) is one of Japan’s most prestigious universities and is ideal for the student looking for an academically challenging program. ICU emphasizes breadth as well as depth of knowledge and offers inquisitive and motivated students from around the world a unique bilingual educational experience. The campus of 150 wooded acres sits on the western doorstep of Tokyo. At ICU the classes are small; the faculty are accomplished and dedicated; and the campus environment is both beautiful and conducive to learning. Over 90% of students are Japanese citizens, and ICU welcomes approximately 100 exchange students each year. Students can participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities and organizations, including baseball, basketball, drama, karate, kendo, modern dance, glee-club, or tea ceremonies.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of central Tokyo in Kawagoe, Saitama, Tokyo International University offers a quality environment for learning combined with direct access to the heart of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. Established in 1965 as a small business college, TIU has grown from humble beginnings to a fully accredited private university with 5 undergraduate and 4 graduate schools. The Japan Studies Program (JSP) was established at Tokyo International University in 1989. Program enrollment is around 30 students per semester, among a TIU student body of 6,400 Japanese and 700 international students.

Toyo University was founded in 1887 as a school of philosophy. At its inception, the University was popular with the public as a small, specialized school in oriental philosophy and liberal arts. Today it consists of 15 graduate schools and 13 undergraduate schools located on 5 campuses in the greater Tokyo area. University enrollment is approximately 30,000 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. Toyo University was the first ISEP member in Tokyo, allowing students to see and experience everything from this metropolis. This is an ideal university for students looking to truly immerse themselves in Japanese language and culture with students from around the world.
