Representatives of WSU’s affiliated program providers are encouraged to start by familiarizing themselves with WSU’s promoted versus non-promoted program policies for WSU students.
On-campus promotion
During campus visits, affiliated providers should only promote programs that have been approved by WSU Education Abroad as promoted programs to WSU students. This includes promotional activities carried out by provider representatives visiting WSU campuses as well as student ambassadors (paid or unpaid) representing an affiliated provider on a WSU campus.
Affiliated providers may discuss their non-promoted programs with WSU faculty and/or staff but are requested to obtain approval from WSU Education Abroad in advance. This helps ensure that academic departments are not overwhelmed with requests from affiliated providers and helps to account for other considerations such as term overlaps. Please inform faculty or staff if a program is non-promoted at the time of discussion.
Affiliated providers interfacing directly with WSU academic departments supports curricular integration and creates opportunities for underserved student demographics. An academic department requesting that a program option be granted promoted status carries significant weight in the WSU Education Abroad evaluation process.
Campus Visits
Visiting WSU in person is an impactful recruitment tool because our students place a high value on personal interactions.
The Education Abroad office serves all WSU campuses but is located on WSU’s flagship residential campus in Pullman. Our ability to support and facilitate campus visits is accordingly much stronger in Pullman than on other campuses.
When affiliated providers plan to visit WSU, Education Abroad should always be notified at least three weeks in advance. Education Abroad can assist with reserving classrooms or conference rooms on campus (e.g., info sessions, group advising, etc.) or making tabling reservations if desired. Further advance notice should be provided if reservation assistance is needed, and the provider is responsible for any costs associated with the reservations.
Some additional tips and guidelines for affiliated providers include:
- Contact faculty and staff directly to inquire about classroom visits (Education Abroad is unable to assist with this). Please do so judiciously, and don’t send multiple requests (even if you never receive a response).
- Contact faculty and staff directly to discuss program offerings and/or custom programs.
- This can include non-promoted programs. Please refer to the guidance in the On-Campus Promotion section above and inform faculty or staff if a program is non-promoted at the time of discussion.
- When speaking with students, please discuss promoted programs only.
Student alumni ambassadors
Student ambassadors representing a specific program provider on campus are required to be Peer Ambassadors and, if they are based on the Pullman campus, encouraged to be Peer Advisors. Additionally, they’re required to have at least three check-ins per semester with an Education Abroad staff member (beginning of term, mid-term, and end of term). Student ambassadors should only discuss promoted programs with other WSU students.
During recruitment and onboarding, providers should direct prospective alumni ambassadors to complete the Education Abroad Peer Programs application.
WSU peer ambassadors and peer advisors
Education Abroad oversees a team of Peer Ambassadors and Peer Advisors. Peer Ambassadors have their contact and basic program information listed on the Education Abroad website, enabling prospective study abroad students to ask recent alumni about their experience. Peer Advisors have a higher responsibility and commitment level: they maintain weekly office hours, attend weekly team meetings, and are expected to conduct a minimum of three outreach events per semester. Peer Advisors are required to be based on the Pullman campus.
