Paul Whitney was named interim vice president for WSU’s Office of International Programs in April 2024, having served as associate vice president since 2017. In addition to collaborating on fundamental research on sleep loss and decision making, he leads WSU’s Health Equity Research Center (HERC), a network of WSU faculty, staff, and students from multiple colleges and campuses interested in understanding the factors that promote health resilience in people disadvantaged by poverty, discrimination, and poor access to health care.
Dr. Whitney earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1984. He came to WSU in 1987 as an assistant professor and became a full professor in 1998. He was named Chair for the Department of Psychology in July 2000.

In August 2005, Whitney became the associate dean for Research for the College of Liberal Arts. Beginning in August 2008, he served a 9-month stint as the interim dean before taking on the role of senior associate dean in Liberal Arts and continuing that role in the merged College of Arts and Sciences until he joined International Programs.
