Scholarship Scam Targets Perspective International Students

Recently the Washington State University (WSU) Office of International Programs has become aware of an email scam in which the addressee was notified that he/she has been awarded a scholarship to attend WSU. This email requested the recipient to donate money to the University in order to help fund future scholars and looked like it was sent from the international email address used by the Office of International Programs, Undergraduate Admissions Dept.

Neither the email or any letter with a similar message or request is from WSU. If you or anyone you know is a recipient of such an email or letter, we request that you contact WSU Office of International Programs right away or the WSU Police Department.

This is an excerpt from the fraudulent email:

We are delighted to notify you that you are a WSU undergraduate with effect from March 18th 2014.The college dissertation your have emailed us is among the best college dissertations we have ever received. We look forward to more novels and research papers from you; we could even help you publish a book of some sort.
I am confident that know you are on a full scholar and we will fund you to travel various countries around the world to support your research. We have received commendations by*** so we have a very keen eye on you.
Please don’t hesitate to ask me anything related to your academic field
We will commune with you on further required details and your education material.
Please contribute a donation to the university so we could give out scholars to more students in the future.
Go Cougs!

The sender also provided the recipient with a fake WSU Student ID Number and WSU Department contact information.

This email is a scam and we are in the process of investigating the issue. WSU does not want prospective students to be concerned about their admission status and we are proactively working to identify the source of these emails. If you have any concerns you may contact us for assistance.
