Tax for international students that receive grants/scholarships above the cost of tuition and mandatory fees
If you receive grants/scholarships throughout the year above the cost of tuition and mandatory fees, please make sure to check your student account each semester (around mid-term is perfect) and connect with Bursar’s office within the same tax year if you do see a tax withholding charge.
Charges within the same tax year can be fixed, but after December 31st it is more complicated.
Change of address
Please notify International Student and Scholar Services immediately if you change your home address over the summer. Federal regulations require you to notify our office within 10 days of any move in the U.S. Here is how to update your address:
- Log in to MyPassport with your WSU Network ID and password.
- Click on “F-1 Student Services.”
- Complete the “F-1 Address update form.”
New Rule for U.S. Visa Interviews
The U.S. Department of State issued an important update on September 6, 2025, regarding the scheduling of nonimmigrant visa interviews at U.S. Embassies/Consulate abroad. Effective immediately, you must schedule your visa interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country of citizenship or legal residence.
Existing visa appointments at third-country posts generally remain valid, but new bookings must adhere to the new rule. For the full announcement, please visit this update on Travel.State.Gov visa news page.
We know this may add complexity to your planning, especially with any upcoming travel. We’re committed to assisting you through this change, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch at +1 509-335-4508, email us at ip.intlservices@wsu.edu, or book an appointment to speak with one of our advisors.
Continuous Doctoral Status for Graduate Students
Doctoral students are placed on CDS automatically by the graduate school when they are not enrolled for the term (zero credit enrollment) AND have passed their Prelim Exams. A $50 charge is placed on their student account and students are sent an email confirming they have been placed in CDS status.
However, international students cannot have zero enrollment in the term and maintain legal immigration status. This is where academic rules and immigration rules differ. Students must be enrolled in 10 credits or have ab approved Reduced Course Load to be enrolled in fewer credits if they wish to remain in the U.S. in F or J status. Please book an appointment to speak with one of our advisors at our office about your options in this scenario. We will be happy to assist.
If you have any questions about the above announcement, please contact International Student and Scholar Services.
