Your safety and security during your time abroad is important to us.
WSU requires all students participating in WSU-sponsored, -affiliated, -promoted, or -related activities abroad to register with International Programs’ Global Learning department. This includes individual as well as group student travel.
The International Travel Registry is an online registration system that provides Washington State University with a secure means of documenting international travel for its students participating in WSU-sponsored or -related experiences abroad.
The International Travel Registry should be used only for not-for-credit experiences. If students will be earning academic credit from their experience abroad, please email Global Learning for guidance.
To complete travel registration, please navigate to the International Travel Registry. You will find instructions for completing your registration and more information about the benefits of the registry.
If you are a WSU faculty or staff member and you’d like to start the registration for multiple students participating in a trip you’re organizing, please use this form.
Please plan to complete your registration as soon as you have your international plans in place and at least 2 weeks before your departure date. If your departure date is less than 2 weeks away and you still have not completed your travel registration, registration is still required and must be completed as soon as possible.
All WSU departments are responsible for ensuring students document their university-related travel plans through the International Travel Registry.
Please Note: This registry is only for students. WSU employees traveling abroad should review information from Compliance and Risk Management International Travel webpage for information about emergency services and international insurance coverage provided by the university.

Travel and health insurance
All students registering with the International Travel Registry will be automatically enrolled in comprehensive WSU International Travel and Health Insurance provided by WSU’s contracted insurance provider On Call International. Insurance cost is billed through myWSU.* The total cost of insurance coverage depends on the length of your time spent abroad.
Students who already have international insurance equivalent to or better than the WSU international insurance travel policy have the option to submit a waiver for approval to not be enrolled in WSU’s insurance policy and not be billed the associated cost. More details about WSU’s insurance policy and the waiver process is provided in the travel registration materials made available after a registration has been started. Insurance waivers will not be accepted less than 3 weeks prior to a student’s departure date.
WSU provides emergency medical and emergency situation travel insurance to all faculty, staff, and graduate student employees on work-related travel abroad. WSU faculty and staff traveling with students will be enrolled in the same insurance as their students at no cost to the employee.
More information on WSU’s comprehensive International Travel and Health Insurance Policy can be found through OnCall’s Searchlight Portal. Enter the Group ID number 100004CPPD16 to access the policy.
For any questions about international insurance or expected costs for a given trip length, please email Global Learning.
*In some cases, the WSU department sponsoring the international travel will cover the cost of the international insurance rather than having the student being billed directly.
For WSU employees traveling abroad
Information about international travel for WSU employees is provided by WSU Compliance and Risk Management. It is recommended that WSU employees also enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP is a free service allowing U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. (Non-U.S. citizens may apply to receive travel advisories.) Applicants enrolled in STEP will receive safety updates for their destination country directly from the U.S. Department of State. Enrollment in STEP allows the U.S. Department of State to better assist those enrolled in case of an emergency abroad.
