Cougs Abroad - What's new with WSU Global Learning

Updated: University International Travel Policy

WSU has released an updated BPPM (95.53) of the International Travel Policy.

New “Non-Credit Independent Program” form

Are you or a fellow Coug taking a group of students (undergraduate or graduate) abroad for a conference, research, service, athletics, or any other reason, but not awarding credit? We have a new streamlined form to help you be compliant with university policy.

Find more information regarding international travel risk management.

A note for our advisors

Outgoing exchange students limited to exchange credit only

For our advisors, students taking part in bilateral exchanges have 100% of full-time tuition captures to be placed in a fund to pay for the student coming to WSU in their reciprocating place. If a student would like to enroll in Global Campus or other credit during the same time as exchange, additional fees will be posted to their account at the per-credit-hour rate of courses over 18 total credit hours.

Dates and to-dos

Team changes and updates

Welcome, Sarah Palacios

Sarah Palacios joined the Global Learning team in December 2023 as a Global Learning Advisor and Coordinator who is specializing in faculty led programs in the Carson College of Business, College of Education, Murrow, Health, and Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture! Sara joins us from having spent several years working in Germany. Willcommen!

Fare thee well, Alicia

It is with mixed emotions that I let the broader community know that the Global Learning team will bid farewell to Alicia Leacox on March 6. Alicia has served as the Global Learning Exchange Coordinator for the past several months, but received an unexpected job offer for her dream job with the Palouse Conservation District.

The Exchange Coordinator role will be posted soon.

New roles

Congratulations to Tiffany Prizzi who has been promoted to Global Learning Assistant Director and now oversees all Faculty Led programming and outreach!

Congratulations to Megan Styborski who has been promoted to Database & Enrollment Specialist. This is in recognition of Megan’s many-faceted role of managing our myStudyAbroad portal, evaluating and posting all GL-related credit and transferred courses, shepherding risk management of our ITR students, and so much more!

NAFSA leadership

  • Tiffany Prizzi has been elected as the NAFSA Region 1 Chair Elect! Tiffany will serve for 3 years as a leader in NAFSA Region 1.
    • Speaking of NAFSA, the 2025 Regional Conference will be held Oct. 6-10 in Vancouver, Canada. First-year annual membership in NAFSA is $199.

Shouts out!

We have so many champions across the university and the world, but this month we want to give special shouts out to the following GL heroes.

Dr. Joseph Ianelli has been an innovative partner, developing new, exciting, and even FUNDED methods to exchange students through partnership and research. Once students arrive in Pullman or to their campus abroad, he continues to champion their success through stewarding enrollment and creative inquiry. Thank you, Dr. Ianelli!

Ethan Pickerinig (CCB), Becky Bitter (RO), and Lisa Devine (ESG) for their problem solving and partnership in developing new study abroad course numbers that will aid in more seamless degree auditing of pre-requisite courses taken abroad. If you’d like to explore a similar solution for your academic unit, we’d be happy to support that, and we already have a pathway developed.

The Center for Community Standards team has been a partner with Global Learning for a long time and is an integral part of our efforts to process student applications quickly and in compliance with the Washington Administrative Code. All the team members have been exceedingly helpful and responsive as we solve problems and need last-minute approvals. Thank you!

The Global Learning team. This is a bit of personal license I am taking to thank the team, and all of you, for your support as I (Kelly) undergo treatment for cervical cancer. It has taken a village to keep things moving and the GL team has been stepping up to the plate at every turn!
