March 5 information session

Thank you to Jaclyn Assarian, Outreach and Recruitment Specialist with IIE, for her virtual campus visit on March 5. Thank you, also, to Dr. Kate Hellman, Director of International Student and Scholar Services, for introductions and managing the chat during the session.

It was wonderful to see many of you (over 25!) were able to attend and learn more about the Fulbright U.S. Scholar program. I hope you found the information helpful and encourages you to apply.

View the slides Jaclyn used for the campus visit presentation and the recorded session, which includes a transcript.

WSU Liaison note

For the Fulbright S-I-R competition, we have reached out to IIE, and they confirmed that applications from different WSU campuses will be considered separate ‘institution’ proposals for this competition. The Office of International Programs has discussed this opportunity with interested parties at two campuses.  If you are interested, please contact Erin-Kae Rice at ekrice@wsu.edu or 509-335-4352 for more information.

Fulbright opportunities for U.S. institutions

The Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence Program (S-I-R)

S-I-R  is now accepting applications to host an international scholar in the 2025-2026 academic year for a semester or full academic year to support campus internationalization goals.

The Fulbright Program provides J-visa sponsorship, travel, and modest living stipends to scholars who enhance internationalization efforts at diverse U.S. institutions through:

  • Teaching courses
  • Curriculum development
  • Cross-campus activities
  • Developing exchange partnerships
  • Community engagement

Interested? Join us at this upcoming live webinar:

Begin your S-I-R Institutional Host application for 2025-2026. The application will close on June 3, at 2 p.m. PDT. Please contact SIR@iie.org for more information.

The Fulbright Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) Program

The Fulbright Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) provides funding for campuses to host Fulbright Visiting Scholars already in the United States for short-term speaking engagements at U.S. institutions of higher education.

The OLF program is a great way to initiate involvement with Fulbright as it is a short-term award. The typical OLF visit is 2-5 days long, with the scholar completing guest lectures, cultural events, and other similar engagements on and off campus. The OLF award covers the scholar’s direct roundtrip airfare, a modest airport transit allowance, and a per diem meals and incidental expenses allowance. At the end of OLF, the Visiting Scholar returns to their home campus.

The program accepts applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. Begin an OLF application. Institutions may apply to host for an OLF visit from the list of the eligible Fulbright Visiting Scholars

For any inquiries about the OLF program, contact OLF@iie.org.

Special Programs

Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships In Public Health

The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships are offered through a partnership between the Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These awards were established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings.

The Fogarty International Center, NIH, will provide support to the research training site and may provide orientation for the fellows at the NIH. In addition, NIH will provide a pre-departure orientation for selected Fellows in Washington, D.C.

To participate in the Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen and:

  • Be enrolled in graduate or medical school. Applicants who hold a doctorate are ineligible.
  • Have sufficient proficiency in the host language to carry out the project required.

Other basic requirements and processes for applying for the Fulbright-Fogarty Program are the same as for any Fulbright U.S. student study/research grant.

Fulbright-National Geographic Award

The Fulbright-National Geographic Award Program is seeking proposals that undertake an in-depth examination of globally relevant issues as an add-on to the Fulbright Open Study/Research project. Funded projects will incorporate science, storytelling, and/or education, and must align with one or more of the Society’s 5 focus areas: Ocean, Land, Wildlife, Human Histories and Cultures, or Human Ingenuity. This award is made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society.

Successful Fulbright-National Geographic applicants, in addition to receiving standard Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research benefits and additional grant funds, will join the National Geographic Society’s global community of Explorers and gain access to resources and opportunities such as training, regional Explorer events, speaking engagements, and dedicated mentor and staff support. The National Geographic Society expects to select up to 5 applicants for this award.
