  1. Need to complete internship off campus for your degree (unpaid or paid)? Apply for CPT!*

If you need to complete an off-campus internship for your degree (examples include HBM, Sports Management, and Human Development degrees, and doctoral students who need to do research off campus), then make sure you learn more about CPT.

CPT stands for Curricular Practical Training and is a work authorization for international students in F-1 status. It allows F-1 students to participate in paid or unpaid internships off campus when the internships are part of the degree program they are pursuing.

Curricular Practical Training is authorized by Global Services only, and students are encouraged to speak with an International Student Advisor PRIOR to engaging in any activity off campus.

*Academic English and Bridge students do NOT have the ability to apply for CPT.

  1. Deadline to drop a class for short-term courses – DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR DEADLINE!

The last day to drop a course without record is Feb. 17, 2021, BUT special short-term courses (6-, 9-, and 12-week courses) have a different deadline! Make sure to visit http://registrar.wsu.edu/deadlines-drop-withdrawal/ to find out the drop deadlines of those courses, otherwise you will have a W (withdraw) on your transcript!

*Academic English and Bridge students do NOT have the ability to add or drop classes.

  1. Free writing consultation for graduate students

The Graduate Writing Center offers free writing consultation for any graduate student working on any project at any stage of writing. Bring in your journal articles, seminar papers, lab reports, CVs, and anything else to talk with a professional consultant. You may also write in the Center’s space on our new computers with a consultant on hand to answer any questions you might have about your project. For a full schedule and more information, go to https://writingprogram.wsu.edu/graduate-writing-center/.

  1. Student support groups available to international students

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers a wide variety of groups and workshops to help students address personal issues in a safe, supportive space with peers who may be experiencing similar challenges. Research has consistently shown that groups are as effective as (and sometimes more effective than) one-on-one counseling. Although there may be some initial hesitation about participating in a CAPS group or workshop, the majority of WSU students who engaged with groups at CAPS reported having a positive experience and would recommend it to a friend. The benefits of group counseling include alleviating distress, learning skills, increasing hope, feeling connected, and trying out new ways of approaching challenges.

How to Join a Group or Workshop

  • Groups are open to all currently enrolled WSU students who have paid the student health fee. Students must join the group’s Zoom sessions from the state of Washington.
  • All potential group members will be asked to complete paperwork and meet with a counselor to determine if the group is the right fit for them.
  • For skill-building groups/workshops: Upon meeting with a counselor, students will be placed in a workshop of preference without going through a pre-group screening/orientation.
  • For counseling/support groups: Upon meeting with a counselor, students will also meet with the group facilitators for a pre-group orientation to find out more details about the group, discuss any concerns or questions about joining group, and review group agreements.

  1. Learning Support Center

The Learning Support Center is here to meet the specific academic support needs of all international students. If you haven’t looked at the LSC website yet, you can find it here. It includes a complete tutoring schedule showing convenient hours where you can find a live tutor to help you with your classes (including weekend hours!). You’ll find general English tutors and a tutor who specializes in COM 102.
