  1. Department of Education (ED) to allocate emergency funds to include international students

The U.S. Department of Education released new guidance on the third round of Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund grants authorized by the American Rescue Plan. In this latest guidance, the department provided additional ways in which institutions can use emergency grants to support vulnerable students, monitor and suppress the coronavirus, and re-engage students whose education was disrupted by the pandemic. International students can access the emergency grants this time. However, institutions must ensure that funds go to international students who have exceptional need.

We continue to encourage international students under financial distress to submit a request for financial assistance through the Office of the Dean of Students: https://studentcare.wsu.edu/student-resources/financial-assistance/ .

Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions.

  1. Learning Support Center

The Learning Support Center is open again and is here to help all international students and scholars! Come see our new space in Kruegel G-10, the basement of Kruegel Hall!

If you haven’t looked at the LSC website yet, you can find it here.

There is a complete tutoring schedule with convenient hours where you can find a live tutor to help you with your classes (including evening hours!). Find the tutor schedule here. Tutoring hours are still available virtually through Zoom.

If you have any questions about the LSC and what it has to offer, please reach out to Lauren Reed at lauren.kruger@wsu.edu or come see her in the Learning Support Center on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

  1. Vaccine requirement for fall 2021

WSU is requiring vaccines “in arms” for fall 2021 with personal exceptions and with some caveats for international students and scholars who were vaccinated in their home countries. You do not have to be vaccinated to come to WSU but rest assured we will take care of you after you arrive.

Since announcing our intentions for the fall semester and the COVID vaccine requirement, Cougar Health Services, International Programs, and others have received multiple inquiries about which vaccines will qualify for incoming students and employees who were vaccinated outside the U.S. After consultation with Dr. Palmer and reviewing the currently available information, we are updating our Vaccine Requirement policy to state that WSU will accept any vaccine currently approved by the WHO under their EUL/PQ process. There are currently 6 such vaccines that qualify, including the 3 vaccines widely available in the U.S. Students and employees who are unable to be fully vaccinated prior to returning to WSU will be provided assistance in locating resources. Read more here: ip.wsu.edu/on-campus/covid-19-faqs/

If you wish to receive a vaccine upon return to the U.S., here is how to find a location: https://vaccinelocator.doh.wa.gov/. After receiving the vaccine, you can submit an attestation here: https://attestation.wsu.edu/.

  1. May 31, 2021, Memorial Day Holiday

WSU will observe the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 31, 2021. Therefore, all IP offices will be closed that day.
